DALTON, DAUGHTER OF MR. W. B.: Died, on the 15th instant, the little two year-old daughter of Mr. W. B. Dalton, who lives near Algood. Mr. Dalton has been very unfortunate, about four weeks ago, the little twin sister to this one died. [Date: 1/18/1894, Vol. VII, No. 12, Page 5]
DANIEL, WILEY: Wiley Daniel, son of T. J. Daniel, living four miles above town, died Tuesday evening of fever. (Overton County) [Date: 7/25/1895, Vol. VIII, No. 38, Page 4]
DANIELS, CHARLEY: Killed Himself. Double Springs, May, 22 -- Charley Daniels, who lives half way between this place and Cookeville, shot himself with a rifle, here this morning. The cause for his rash act was said to be caused from the fact that he was deeply in love with a young lady who was not so deeply impressed with his wooings, and gave him the "marble hear" so to speak, so he determined to launch himself forth in the sweet subsequently. DANIELS, JOHN: John Daniels, a highly respected citizen of West side, and a former citizen of Hilham, Overton county, died Sunday morning after an illness of only a week. Mr. Daniels leaves a wife and large family of children dependent upon her for support. Mr. Daniels was a consistent member of the Christian church, and leaves many friends to mourn his untimely end. DAVID, I. B.: Last Wednesday night Mr. I. B. David, of Prosperity country, quietly passed away. He had lived to a good old age and had made the world better by his being here. . . . [Date: 8/30/1894, Vol. VII, No. 44, Page 2]
DAVIS, ALFRED: Alfred Davis, son of A. A. Davis, of Brush Creek, died last Friday morning of pneumonia, and was buried on his place. Mr. Davis was a single man. [Date: 1/11/1894, Vol. VII, No. 11, Page 1]
DAVIS, ELIJAH GARLAND: Elijah Garland, the two-year-old boy of Lee Davis, who lives two miles north of town, died Tuesday evening from spinal affection. He was a bright little fellow and his parents are deepl grieved at their loss. [Date: 8/18/1898, Vol. XI, No. 46, Page 5]

DAY, JAMES: James Day, an old respected citizen of the First district of White county, died last Sunday, aged 65. He was buried Monday by the Sparta Lodge F. & A. M. (White County) [Date: 4/2/1896, Vol. IX, No. 23, Page 1]
DEERING, SALLIE: We regret to learn that Mrs. Sallie Deering, who lives four miles South of Cookeville, is very low and is not expected to live much longer, Mrs. Deering will be 90 years old the 23rd of next month, and is a highly respected old lady whose many friends will regret to learn of her serious illness. DENEV, DAUGHTER OF HARRISON: Laurel Hill Correspondence: We are exceedingly sorry to report the death of the eight year-old daughter of Harrison Denev. She was in the field picking up stalks and burning them when her clothes became ignited and she was burned to death before assistance could reach her (Dekalb County) [Date: 3/5/1896, Vol. IX, No. 19, Page 1]
DENNY, AGNES: We are pained to announce the death of Mrs. Agnes Denny, which occurred at her home near Buffalo Valley, in this county on last Monday. Mrs. Denny was the wife of John Denny and mother of the Judge T. L. Denny and Silas Denny of Cookeville. She had been in feeble health for some time past, being well advanced in years, but her death came unexpected to her family and friends. Mrs. Denny was a noble hearted, christian woman, having been a consistent and devoted member of the Baptist church all her life. She lived to raise to man and womanhood a large and respectable family of children and drew around her a large and devoted circle of friends who will sadly miss and mourn her loss. DENNY, TIMOTHY: Timothy Denny, an old and much respected citizen, died at his home last Friday on Indian creek, near Buffalo Valley. He was something over seventy years old and had always been a quiet, industrious citizen, a successful farmer and highly esteemed by all who knew him. DIBRELL, INFANT OF SHERIFF: Sheriff Dibrell and wife suffered the sad bereavement of the death of their little baby boy last Sunday. (White County) [Date: 8/6/1896, Vol. IX, No. 42, Page 1]
DIBRELL, MARY E.: Mrs. Mary E. Dibrell, wife of the late Gen. G. G. Dibrell, died at her home in Sparta last Sunday morning. DILLARD, MRS. G. D.: Mrs. Dr. G. D. Dillard died at her home in Michigan on August 2, after a short illness. Mrs. Dillard resided at this place for a number of years and has many friends here who will pained to learn of her death. (Dekalb County) [Date: 9/23/1897, Vol. X, No. 49, Page 8]
DILLARD, VAN: We are pained to announce the death of Mr. Van Dillard, of Granville. Mr. Dillard was in robust health until about two years ago at which time he was seized with a severe attack of grippe from the effects of which he never recovered, but gradually wasted away until Friday last when he died while visiting in Overton county. Mr. D. was the youngest son of the Rev. John Dillard and a brother of Capt. H. H. Dillard, of this place. He was an intelligent useful christian gentleman and leaves a wife, four children and many friends to mourn his untimely end. The PRESS deeply sympathizes with the grief-stricken family. DONNELL, JAMES A.: Our whole community was shocked Monday morning on rising to hear that James A. Donnell had died during the latter part of the night. Mr. Donnell was in apparent good health, having attended Sunday school at the Methodist church where he was teacher, and morning and night services at the Cumberland church. DORMAN, DAVID: A Worthy Man Passes Away -- Last Saturday, at 6:30 p. m., the spirit of David Dorman, a well known and honored citizen of this place, passed into eternity. Mr. Dorman had been in precarious health for several months and his demise was not unexpected. Only a few days before the end came he suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never rallied. Mr. Dorman was 64 years of age and a native of Pennsylvania. He been a citizen of Cookeville for about ten years, coming her as an engineer for the N. & K. railroad, which responsible position be filled to the entire satisfaction of the company and public. He was univerally popular, and beloved by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and four children -- a son and daughter residing in Cookeville, Mr. E. E. Dorman and Mrs. H. T. Rout. He was a member of the M. E. church, and also of the Knights of Pythias and one or two other fraternal orders. His remains were interred in the Cookeville cemetery Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, with the K. of P. burial service. [Date: 4/28/1898, Vol. XI, No. 28, Page 5]
DORTON, ESTELLE: Died, March 29th, Estelle, infant daughter of George and Mary M. Dorton, after spending the brief period of only nine months upon earth. DOWELL, GEORGE: We are pained to announce the death of George Dowell which occurred near his home about four miles North of Cookeville last Saturday night. His death was caused by a fall from a mule which ran away with and threw him to the ground on Friday last. Mr. Dowell was a quiet, orderly christian gentleman and leaves a family and numerous relatives and friends to grieve over his sudden and untimely end. DYER, SALLIE: Mrs. Sallie Dyer, of the 7th district of this county, widow of the late Carroll Dyer, died at the house of Sam Houston Dyer, on the 27th of July. Mrs. Dyer was about 73 years of age. She had been a consistent member of the christian church for many years, and left a large family of children and grand children, a host of friends to mourn her loss. Peace to her memory.
