QUERIES

Message boards and mailing lists are excellent means by which researchers can connect and exchange information. I am the administrator for two message boards at Rootsweb: Putnam County, Tennessee and Jackson County, Tennessee. If you have an interest in either of these two counties, please visit the boards at

MAILING LIST

In addition to the message boards, I am the administrator for four mailing lists: Putnam County, White County, Jackson-Clay-Overton Counties (aka JCO) Tennessee mailing list and the Tennessee and the Civil War mailing list.

Mailing lists operate in two modes: mail and digest modes.

• Mail Mode - If you subscribe in mail mode, then you will receive an individual copy of each message submitted to the list.
• Digest Mode - If you subscribe in digest mode, then you will receive messages from the mailing list several at a time in a "digest".

To subscribe, send a message to the appropriate list, leave the subject line blank, and put the word "subscribe" without the quotes in the body of the message. Or  click on the appropriate list name and send the mail:

To send mail to the list and mode of list for which you are subscribed. For example, if you are subscribed to the Putnam County list in mail mode, you must send mail to tnputnam-l@rootsweb.com. If you send mail to the list in digest mode, it will bounce.

To unsubscribe, send a message to the appropriate list, leave the subject line blank, and put the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the body of the message. Or  click on the appropriate list name and send the mail:

All of the email submitted to the lists are archived. You can search the archives or browse them.

• TO SEARCH THE ARCHIVES. Go to the Interactive Search Engine. To search the any Mailing List, type in the name of the list. For example, "tnputnam" without the quotes at the Name of List box. Then click the Submit Query button. When the next page comes up, type in your surnames of interest in the Query box. Select which year that you are interested in. Then hit Search. A listing of all mail messages that have been posted to the list with those surnames will be displayed.
• TO BROWSE THE ARCHIVES. Go to the Mailing List Archives. To browse the any mailing list, type in the name of the list at the Enter the name of a mailing list here:  box. Then click Submit Query button. An index to the various months will appear.
