- Most of his service: detailed to drive and take charge of medicine wagon of Dr. Mozey
- On 1 Jan 1862, he was taken ill at Louisburg, VA with pneumonia and typhoid fever.
- HAP was at White Sulfur Springs, VA for about 3 weeks.
- Transferred to Knoxville, TN for about 3 weeks.
- Went to rejoin unit at Pocataligo, SC about 6 weeks
- Came down with Rheumatism
- Honorably discharged
- Went to his home in Coffee County. His left hand was badly frost-bitten in the winter of 1861. He lost the use of his left hand.
- Returned to Coffee County which was infested with Calvin Bixby's gang of bushwhackers and guerrillas. It was their practice to kill every with CSA papers in possession.

- Wyatt Cleghorn was also a Confederate soldier.
- Mary is a sister HAP's wife.
- HAP had a discharge. Coffee County was infested with Col. Bray's gang of guerillas. They were killing and robbing Rebels. HAP was persuaded to destroy papers.
- HAP lives with his son-in-law Thomas Lee.
- 1 Dec 1906 - Elizabeth D. Powers - wife of HAP and sister of Mary Wooten; kept discharge papers for several months with her; Mother, brother and Simon Roberts advised him to destroy the papers.
