• 21 Oct 1906 - Rutledge Smith - The events happened just has H. M. Nicholas stated. When JH was at home, he was ordered killed, his house was burned by Stokes men. He had to keep in hiding while disabled as to keep them from killing him. Some men did find him and beat him with pistols.
• 26 Oct 1906 - JH requests status of his pension
• 29 Oct 1906 - Tennessee Board of Pension Examiners - returns status
• 6 Nov 1906 - H. M. Nicholas - Stokes gave orders to kill JH and his brother if they went to Sparta to take the oath.

  • JH enlisted in September 1862 in Co H of the 8th TN Cavalry; Captain James Barnes; Col. George G. Dibrell
  • Served continously in the army until Fall 1864
  • General Dibrell came to Sparta Expecting to stay several days
  • Several Soldiers went to their homes
  • General Dibrell unexpectedly received orders to move East
  • Men who went to their homes in Overton County, Putnam County, and White County returned to find Dibrell gone.
  • They were unable to get back to their command and joined Colonel Hughes command
  • They fought Stokes men
  • JH received a flesh wound at the Matlock fight in White County
  • In September 1864, the men stopped at a threster in Dry Valley Putnam County to rest
  • JH sat on a thresher to rest.
  • JH got up as the thresher started, the seat of his pants caught in the thresher and jerked him backwards.
  • Two big cogs caught the back of his legs and tore the flesh off to the bone.
  • He was continuously menanced by threats and attacks by Federal bushwhackers
• 2 Nov 1908 - H. M. Nicholas - In the Fall of 1864, JH was on a scouting expedition under Lt. Hill and passed the Hunter Farm where there was a thresher in operation. The men got off their horses to talk to workers. His pant leg got caught in the thresher and his leg was drawn in the cog. The muscle was mashed from the knee to the fool.
