- 24 Jan 1907 - JPH - Was on march from Kentucky. He and other men were detailed to guard wagons. Other men were captured except for JPH, Ivey Sutton, and John Winchester, who got away and hid in a briar patch. The Federals were between them and camp. They tried to get back to Sparta where Colonel Hughes was. Before arrival, they learned that Colonel Hughes had left. They had to choose between joining the Yankees, taking the oath, or begin shot.

- Why do James Burgess, William Dyer, John Farris, Thomas Farris and others get to draw a pension when they were cut off from their command like I was.
- JPH's enlistment was for 12 months. Then he enlisted again.
- He served until 1863 when the command retreated to Loudon.
- John Winchester, Ivey Sutton, JPH and others were cut off from their command

- 29 Jan 1921 - Andy Sliger - presents the conditions at the time when JPH took the oath. The Confederates were cut off from their command. They were endanger of being killed unless they took the oath.

- Turned 88 on 25 March 1921. He was a soldier of 25 Tennessee Infantry Regiment.
- When JPH took the oath, he had a choice of taking the oath or being killed.
